Induction Hardening

Induction Hardening

MW Induction Hardening Service

Induction hardening is a quick and economical form of heat treating that hardens the part's outer section. Also referred to as case hardening, this method works well on many heat treatable steels.

In comparison to most standard induction machines, the M-W machine is capable of extremely high power outout and low frequencies. This results in penetration much deeper into the part, as much as 0.250" deep.

The machine is capable of handling shafts up to 36" in length and up to 2.5" in diameter. Controlling the treatment with a micro-processor ensures reliable and consistent results each and every time.

About induction hardening

Induction hardening is a non-contact process that uses magnetic current to heat a part. It is the same type of heating that is used on an induction stove. The process will only heat materials that are electrically conductive.

The depth of the heat treat is dictated by the frequency of the alternating magnetic field: the slower the field the deeper the material will be heated. The slower the frequency and the deeper the penetration, the more power is required to reach critical temperatures. These high power requirements are often cost prohibitive and part of the reason many induction processes will only reach a depth of 0.060" to 0.080"
